The bears of Destiny
Destiny holistic shop at Battlers Green Farm, Radlett recently held a charity Reiki healing day for the Animal Asia Foundation to help free the Moon Bears.
With the help of Rosemary Lomaz, who facilitated the event, and Sam Russell, who made and sold food, a sum of £400 was raised.
Asiatic Moon Bears are imprisoned for up to 20 years in tiny metal cages no bigger than their on bodies.
Known as moon bears, because of the beautiful golden crescents on their chests, these bears are milked daily for their bile through rusting metal catheters implanted deep into gallbladders, or via open, infected hole in their abdomens, through which the the bile weeps.
The bears live a life of torture, before dying agonisingly slowly as a result of chronic infection.
Following her horrific discovery of bear farming in 1993, Animals Asia founder Jill Robinson MBE, began tireless work within China, resolutely building relationships and negotiating with government departments to bring an end to this cruel practice.
Since October 2000, 41 farms have been closed down by government and overe 184 bears released into the care of Animals Asia rescue centre in Sichuan.
Animals Asia has constructed exciting and innovative rehabilitation areas and namboo forest zones, which include specially designed hammocks, climbing frames, fruit and honey trails, hanging logs and swimming pools, which ensure that the bears are stimulated, enriched and kept busy throughout the day.
Funds are urgently needed for sanctuary construction, veterinary costs and onging care for the bears. Your support will directly contribute towards Jill's work and to helping to put an end to this brutal practice.
If you would like to contribute, please bring or send your donation to Destiny, Batters Green Farm, New Road, Radlett. Tel: 01923 852522.

The Red Planet is about
to be spectacular!
This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that
will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in
recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is
in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on
Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be
certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth
in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as
60,000 years before it happens again.
The encounter will culminate on August 27th
when Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and
will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in
the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9
and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest
75-power magnification.
Mars will look as large as the full moon to
the naked eye. Mars will be easy to spot. At the
beginning of August it will rise in the east at 10p.m.
and reach its azimuth at about 3 a.m.
By the end of August when the two planets are
closest, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach its
highest point in the sky at 12:30a.m. That's pretty
convenient to see something that no human being has
seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at
the beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and brighter
throughout the month.
